Buyer FAQ

Buying used tires, demystified

Everything you need to vet a set with confidence. Want the full checklist? Read the buying guide.

Is it safe to buy used tires?

Yes, when you check the basics. Look for even tread wear of at least 4/32", a manufacture (DOT) date within the last six years, and no patches, bulges, or dry cracking. Every TireTrader listing shows tread depth, DOT year, and condition so you can vet before you message.

What does the DOT / manufacture year mean?

Tires carry a DOT code stamping the week and year they were made. Rubber ages even unused, so most shops won't install tires older than 6 years. We surface the DOT year on every listing and flag tires that are getting old.

How much tread should used tires have?

New tires start around 10/32". The legal minimum is 2/32". For real remaining life, look for 6/32" or more. We show tread in 32nds and an estimated life-left percentage on each listing.

How do I know a seller is trustworthy?

Sellers build a public profile with ratings and reviews from past buyers. Verified Pro sellers have an active subscription and a track record. You can message any seller directly, and report or block anyone who seems off.

How does payment and pickup work?

TireTrader connects local buyers and sellers — you arrange payment and pickup directly, just like a local marketplace. Meet in a public place, inspect the tires in person, and pay once you're satisfied.
